根据时态呼应关系，从整个句子意思来考虑选用时态。在复杂的英文句子中（包括有多个动作的句子），要注意时态的一致性。

It was not until she got to the theatre that she realized that she had left the ticket at home．
解析 从句意看，叙述时间以及“到达”是过去，“把票忘在家里”是过去之前，因此，主从句分别用一般过去时和过去完成时。

解析 根据句意，“感谢”发生在此刻，“旅”发生在过去，因此主句使用一般现在时，而从句使用一般过去时。
▣这条河流受污染已经好几个月了，但是到现在也没有采取措施阻止附近的那些工厂排放废水。(measure)
It is/has been a few months since the river was seriously polluted, but no measures have been taken to stop the factories nearby from letting out waste water.
解析 本句时态比较复杂，从“已经好几个月了”来看，要用句型It is/has been… since…。Since引导的从句用一般过去时，而后面的并列句中的“到现在”提示我们句子用现在完成时。这类句子翻译，要从多方面考虑。

解析 “There is no doubt that…”、“There is no denying that…”等类似的句型中，从句用一般现在时或一般将来时。

解析 no sooner… than…是一个固定句型（一……就……），主句用过去完成时，从句用一般过去时。

分析所给中文的意义，灵活运用动词的时态。
▣他是那么热衷于时尚，以至于在那上面花费了许多钱。(so… that)
He is so keen on fashion that he has spent a lot of money on it.
He was so keen on fashion that he (had) spent a lot of money on it.
解析 中文句中未明确说明时间，可以考虑用现在时，说明现在状况（“花费了许多钱”使用现在完成时）；也可以用过去时，表示曾经的状态（“花费了许多钱”可以使用一般过去时或过去完成时）。
▣得了传染病的人必须及时隔离，而且要隔离两个星期。(isolate)
Those who are/have been infected by the infectious disease must be isolated in time and it will take two weeks of time.
Those who were infected by the infectious disease had to be isolated in time and it would take two weeks of time.
解析 因为没有更多的语境，这个句子的时态也是不明确的。现在时态和过去时态都可以，但须注意分句之间以及主从句之间时态的呼应。

在中译英中，经常会碰到一个句子含几个动词或动词词组，因此，正确的思路应该是首先浏览全句中文，要能够做到根据句中的时间状语和字里行间所给出的提示来定位二个基本时态，即主句的动词时态，而其他动词必须与之呼应。
